We began the day at the Puerto Ayora municipal offices, learning about our project from the city architect, the woman holding the plans. The woman in the blue ball cap is Emily, the Galapagos ICE director, who's been incredibly helpful. It's a real comfort to have someone here who knows the lay of the land, speaks the language fluently, and can smooth out any bumps.
This is the vice mayor's pet project so we're getting a lot of attention. A photographer from the municipal press office shot some video here and at the work site, which was shown on the local TV evening news.
Here's the work site... a former school about 20 minutes bus ride up into the highland... with a few ramshackle buildings remaining, a lot of new concrete building pads, and LOTS of construction debris, weeds and brush. That's our first job - to clear out the brush and the boards left from the concrete forms. Emily was impressed with how hard our kids worked. By the end of the day we were way ahead of where she expected.
Our carriage awaits for the trip back to the hotel...
Manana!
