We left mid morning on Monday from Guayaquil. The flight was on time, then delayed, then less delayed, then Omighsh-we're-boarding! A harbinger of "Galapagos time."
We head west for the better part of two hours over the open Pacific. Skies are clear till we see billowing clouds ahead on the left. "Land ho!"
Baltra, a small, low island is perfect for an airport. It was a U.S. base through WWII, then was given to Ecuador. There's not much there except an open air terminal. It's warm and a bit humid, though probably more comfortable than what you're feeling right now in North Carolina, and surely more so than it will be there in a month or so. There's a constant breeze off the ocean. (They're planning power generating wind turbines to take advantage of the wind. At present they have a (usually reliable) diesel generating plant supplying power.)
As Baltra is a separate island from Santa Cruz, we take a short ferry ride across to the main island.
Welcome to Santa Cruz Island!
